Albion District Library Observes Civil War Sesquicentennial

Visit the Albion District Library to view fascinating displays of authentic documents and artifacts pertaining to Michigan’s involvement in the Civil War.

Visitors to the Ash Street lobby will see an illuminated copy of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, a gift from the Gale Manufacturing Company;  a period book : Women’s Work in the Civil War; Washington Gardner’s certificate of honorable service; a cane made during the war from the Seven Pines Battlefield; the Military Register of the 17th New York Independent Battery; tools for making bullets; and more.

The Adult Room showcases house Clarence Gildersleeve’s GAR Drum Corps drum, medals, books, Confederate money, a trumpet, and beautiful songbooks from the Civil War period.

All items on display are from the collections of the Albion District Library History Room, the Gardner House Museum, and local resident Bill Blomquist.

The public is invited to attend Eric Petro’s presentation “When Lincoln Called:  Michigan’s Response and Action in the Civil War” this Wednesday, March 16, at 12:15.
